A frustrating afternoon saw the Wildcats lose their match to the promotion-chasing Lady Glovers.
Durham Women were beaten 1-0 by Yeovil Town Ladies in their penultimate home match of the season.
In a frustrating afternoon for the Wildcats, the visitors took all three points with a goal minutes before half-time through Natasha Knapman.
The home side did well enough during the opening stages, weathering an early storm from the Lady Glovers, but never quite managing to create their own chances.
Yeovil’s Sarah Wiltshire time and again got down the left-hand side and tried to make things happen for the away team, her first attempt was dragged wide of Helen Alderson’s goal, before captain Sarah Wilson blocked her second attempt minutes later.
Goal scorer Knapman had a chance just after 10 minutes, but shot straight at Alderson, whilst Wiltshire’s header following a corner bounced off the back of Chloe Macek in defence and into the arms of the goalkeeper.
As the half wore on, Wiltshire had numerous of chances to open the scoring, with a curling effort going wide of the post, a shot-cum-cross just missed the goal and then she had the ball in the back of the net which was ruled out for offside – all in the space of around five minutes.
The goal came shortly afterwards, Natalie Haigh played in Knapman, who clipped the ball over the onrushing Alderson.
Durham started the second half on the front foot, Nicki Gears running down the left-hand side and cutting the ball across the box, finding Nat Gutteridge, but her side-foot attempt went agonisingly wide, before Gears again found herself in a similar position, but her shot-cum-cross evaded the goal.
The hour mark saw Yeovil almost double their advantage, Stephanie Williams’ long dipping half-volley crashed on to the top of the bar with the goalkeeper beaten.
Wiltshire was determined to score, this time she beat three defenders, created space, but shot straight at Alderson.
Minutes later, Gears dragged a shot across goal as the Wildcats looked for an equaliser, but as the game wore on, it looked more like Yeovil would score a second.
Knapman, Emily Donovan and Alys Hinchcliffe all had chances, but the best one game with a minute left, the latter’s shot was superbly saved by Alderson.
Midfielder Nat Gutteridge was frustrated by the result and thought their performance deserved a better outcome.
She said: “It was really frustrating, going into the game trying to put the Continental Cup games behind us now and concentrate on the league, so to come away with a 1-0 defeat, it’s not great.
“Yeovil are a decent team, but we still could have gone out there and got something from the game, but, obviously, it wasn’t to be.
“We kept the ball really well in the opening stages, but they got the goal perfect time for themselves just before half-time.
“Up until then, I mean they’ve got some dangerous players, but we dealt with them quite well it’s just unfortunate that from a defensive point of view, that they’ve travelled the length of pitch and scored.
“But, from our point of view, we still had most of the second half to try and get back into the game, but we haven’t managed to get the equaliser or get anything from the game.
“Before the game, we set our targets high, to try and get as many points as possible, so a 1-0 defeat is the most disappointing thing.”
