It’s another solid point on the road for Durham, in memory of one of our most dedicated supporters Harry Tidbury, as Beth Hepple extends her lead at the top of the WSL2 goalscoring charts.
Opening the scoring after ten minutes, Durham’s high pressing proved too much for the hosts. Charging down the Southampton defence, Beth Hepple who pressed the last defender, stealing the ball from the Southampton ‘keeper’s grasp, using quick reactions to tap home beyond Stenson to take Durham a deserved lead.
Coming dangerously close to doubling the lead in the following ten minutes, Beth Hepple’s peach of a cross into the box was smashed into the side netting by Sarah Wilson, before Mollie Lambert’s following racing run into the box forced a strong save from Stenson.
The second half showcased an inspired display from the hosts, as an early equaliser set the tone for a cagey remaining 45. Afforded too much space on the edge of the Durham penalty area, Saints’ captain Atlanta Primus fired a first-time volleyed effort into the far post, meeting Goddard’s cross.
Despite a flurry of chances to retake the lead in the second half, Durham failed to find the breakthrough, settling for just the one point on the road, but a good one at that, against a performing Southampton side.
