2 vs 3
Durham WAn inspired Durham came from behind to beat Blackburn Rovers 3-2 at Ewood Park in the Barclays Women’s Championship to stay third in the table.
Three second half goals allowed the Wildcats to take all three points from Lancashire to remain one point off top spot Birmingham City.
Beth Hepple’s free-kick equalised for Durham which allowed Lauren Briggs and Michaela Foster to get on the scoresheet and secure victory.
After a week-break, Durham looked to right the wrongs of their River Wear derby defeat to Sunderland.
Adam Furness made two changes to their last side – Kai Novak and Carly Johns making way for Dee Bradley and Eleanor Ryan-Doyle.
Beth Hepple’s 20-yard strike in the 13th minute produced an impressive save from Poppy Soper at full stretch to tip the ball over.
Blackburn broke the deadlock on 21 minutes as Farah Crompton was played through to round the outcoming Tatiana Saunders in the penalty area to slot home into an empty net.
Durham came close to an instant response as Lily Crosthwaite was played through but Soper was first to claim the ball.
Crompton came agonisingly close to grabbing Rovers and her second goal of the game when her 38th minute chip beat the stranded Saunders and hit the underside of the crossbar to bounce on the line and out.
It took only five minutes into the second half for Durham to pose a threat as Crosthwaite was brought down for a free-kick outside of the box.
Hepple took the following set-piece which curled round the wall and into the top corner to equalise for Durham.
The Wildcats took the lead in the 62nd minute after clever football from Mollie Lambert released Lauren Briggs on the overlap to squeeze the ball past Soper from a tight angle and complete the turnaround.
Michaela Foster added a third in the 75th minute through a strike on the edge of the box that rifled past Soper to give Durham a two-goal cushion.
Blackburn got one back in the second minute of added time through Georgia Walters but it would be too little too late.
