Hannah Reid delivered a goalkeeping masterclass to help Durham draw 0-0 with Manchester United as the Wildcats kept their unbeaten league record intact.
The Durham stopper thwarted Katie Zelem’s penalty as Casey Stoney’s side dropped their first points of the FA Women’s Championship
United dominated the opening exchanges and had the best chance to take the lead on 10 minutes when Lauren James spurned a chance from point blank range following a cut back from Alex Greenwood’s deep cross.
Both Jess Sigworth and Greenwood came very close as the half went as Stoney’s side continued to push for the opener.
Durham were still creating, though, with Emily Roberts and Abi Cottam both going close to opening the scoring.
As the second half began, United continued to look the most threatening going forward having enjoyed particular success down the flanks.
But Reid was on hand to stop United who failed to capitalise on their chance with James in particular going close with a thunderous effort from outside the box.
The pressure finally looked to have counted for the hosts when Greenwood was tripped in the box by Abby Holmes as referee Thomas Parsons pointed to the spot.
But Zelem was denied by the outstanding Reid as her effort was tipped round the post to keep the scores tied and add to United’s growing frustrations.
With the game into 10 minutes of added time following injury to Leah Galton, United looked for a late winner but Reid once again proved to be difference as she tipped over a final effort to preserve a point.
Beth Hepple had a late chance for the Wildcats but was denied by Chamberlain as the visitors claimed a well-deserved point away from home.
