2 vs 1
Durham WDurham Women fell to a first defeat of the season at Charlton Athletic.
Lily Crosthwaite’s well-taken goal but the visitors ahead at the Valley before a controversial penalty was converted by Kate Bradley to restore parity.
Bradley then you added a second late on to secure victory for the Addicks.
Adam Furness made one change from the side that beat Portsmouth last weekend as Sarah Robson made her first start of the season – while there was a place on the bench for new signing Michaela Foster.
And after a low-key start, Durham struck first. Lauren Briggs’ fine cross-field ball set Crosthwaite away and she calmly finished from the angle.
The Addicks looked to respond and Mel Fillis drove an effort wide before Tatiana Saunders came out well to block Ellie Brazil’s strike.
But it was still the visitors creating the better opportunities – Sarah Wilson steered a header narrowly wide from a Beth Hepple free-kick before Hannah Blake was just unable to turn home Carly Johns’ looped cross.
And the Blues had the first real chance of the second half as Mollie Lambert broke away and saw her low cross claimed by Sophie Whitehouse before Crosthwaite could convert.
From there Charlton saw the majority of the ball albeit without really testing Saunders.
But the game changed after the officials awarded a penalty with ten minutes remaining. After stopping play for a clash in the box, play restarted with a spot kick which Bradley converted.
That gave the Addicks extra wind in their sails and Bradley added a second moments later to turn the game on its head.
Durham enjoyed a strong end to the game with a string of set pieces – the last of which was hacked off the line as Durham looked to force it home, as Charlton saw out the win.
