Bridget Galloway’s 96th minute strike earned Durham a point against Charlton Athletic at Maiden Castle. The Wildcats dominated the ball for large spells of the game but were frustrated by their organised visitors, who had taken a 75th minute lead through Lois Heuchan’s header. But Galloway’s injury time strike saw Durham clinch a point after they pushed everyone forward in the dying embers of the game. Charlton, though, were impressive throughout and put in a performance which far from tallied with their league position. Indeed, it was the Addicks who started brightly with Jess King seeing an early strike chalked-off for offside. Durham grew into the game but found chances hard to come by, in a game that was lacking in quality but full of effort and endeavour from both sides. The Wildcats’ best chances came from set pieces, with Kathryn Hill coming close with two headers with Emily Roberts then seeing a header hacked off the line – before a foul was given in the area. Galloway then sent a shot flashing narrowly over the bar as the first half came to an end, and she would be the first to threaten after the interval too. The striker looked to have applied a crucial touch to Nicki Gears’ low cross, only to see Charlton stopper Eartha Cummings parry her close range effort. There was no eye test required for this particular Cummings in Durham, who had her vision locked on Galloway’s looping shot moments later – tracking back to tip the effort over the bar as it threatened to creep in. From then on, the game became a scrappy affair. Chances were few and far between as Charlton sat back and frustrated their hosts. But after winning a corner following a quick counter-attack, the Addicks would take the lead as Heuchan powered home a header from six yards. From there on out it was pretty much one way traffic, with Durham getting forward to try and find a leveller. And it looked to have eluded them as the game ticked into its final seconds, with a series of crosses and corners dealt with by Charlton. That was until the last delivery of the game, swung in by Sarah Wilson, was nodded on to Galloway who fired home inside the far post to spark mass celebrations from the Wildcats’ squad. There was just time for the kick-off to be taken before Magdalena Golba blew the full-time whistle – handing both sides a share of the spoils
